Flux 2 - the story so far

Hi,

This is just a quick message to keep everyone up-to-date on what's going on at The Escapers.

Very soon, Flux 2 will be in a 'feature-freeze', for those who don't know, this means we will soon stop adding features, so we can concentrate on fixing bugs, and of course, completing the documentation (documenting a moving target is very frustrating). It's basicaly the process of removing the word 'beta' from our website.

The second part of this message is to ask for everyones help. I honestly believe Flux is turning into a great application, it's not perfect, we're working on that  But we need to polish it, fix the niggles. So we really need you guys to tell us what is stopping you from *loving* Flux, what bugs need fixing, what annoys you, what's stopping it from kicking DreamWeaver into the trash.

I'd like to thank everyone for all their bug reports and assistance, it's helped us more than I imagined it could.

hey there.
i am still using RapidWeaver because they offer a Contact form, slideshow-plugin and a blog-plug in.
What i hate on RW is that i cannot design sites i really want to have it (drag n drop)...
So i see Flux is going there BUT...i need these basic functions so that i can do the switch! :)

Cheers,
Michel

Are there any plans to add text to image feature? This would be a BIG Plus!!! i.e. Convert Text to Image Command Automatically creates a GIF graphic from any text on a page. I can't stress this enough. This makes for rapid development. Example; say your mocking up a design and you want to give your graphics designer exact size image templates that will be used in your final project. So you use html to get the exact size you want the image (text) to be, select the text, and PRESTO! You have a graphic stub for your graphics person. I hope this makes sense!
Thanks in advance for adding this before the app-freeze :)

screencasts/tutorials on using flux would be great!

Hi!

I am currently developing a 'Gallery' plugin that use SlimBox to create a nice LightBox style image collection.

As for screencasts, I've just made one, it's just waiting for the narration to re-done, the audio was quite poor the first time round.

The biggest shortcomings to make this a DreamWeaver killer I see are:

* Documentation, documentation, documentation
* Lack (so far) of 3rd party plugins and themes - hope you're encouraging this
* Integration with SVN (or Versions) and other support for project collaboration

My other concern is the size of your company - the same concern I had in the early days for RapidWeaver. Getting on board with Flux is at this point a bit of a gamble.

Regarding the first comment, I hope your site doesn't become the place to go to vent about RapidWeaver. They're two different products and each will have its market niche.

Trying out Flux 2 beta, first time. It seems kind of sluggish, or is that just me? Running it on a brand new MBP 2.66Ghz with 4G or ram, and the site I'm checking it out with is pretty basic.

Hey Guys.

I have a few complaints and requests.

My number one complaint so far, is the way you handle inline/external styles. When I click on an element in edit view, the inspector is now 'inline'. If i click on the element tab in the left hand browser, it will be external. This inconsistency is super confusing when editing elements. There is never a reason to have inline css. I've found myself having to remove inline styles and re-make all the changes back on the external instance. We need at least a preference that FORCES external style.

I would really love to see a library of elements that are pre-defined. We re-use many elements to conserve time. I don't need to build a horizontal nav a bunch of times. And I don't need to re-design a container div a bunch of times.

For instance, if I built a nice rounded edge div, with a great background, and header / text / link. I should be able to save this element to a library. Now if I am creating a new website, I could just drop this in.

CSS Sprite support!

Finally, the biggest thing dreamweaver lacks is wordpress support, or ecommerce suite support.

There are 3rd party plugins, but they aren't marketed very well. And they work *decently*.

I think you could market your product if you hit a home run on a wordpress plugin. If i could design themes for wordpress without having to keep switching to a live server, or running MAMP, I might just die happy :)

Last thing, is live Photoshop support. I like the image editing idea you guys are doing, but the overall feel of your app is towards people who know what they are already doing. I wouldn't waste your time re-inventing the wheel. Photoshop integration would make development using your app just that much faster. This AfterEffects.

You guys rock, I love the product so far. Keep it up!

Sorry I meant Think AfterEffects (photoshop integration)

I just learned about your product as version 1.4 was a giveaway in Practical Web Design magazine. I haven't tried it yet, but the screencast made me salivate over a program that is as easy as any mac app but has html and css control.

Here's what I'd like to see (since you asked):

- XHTML mobile profile (have a look at ready.mobi for the exact specs)

- An easy way to make Wordpress themes (do that and you can charge more as people break down your door)

- Next time you do a screencast, let us see the whole screen please, that flashlight in the dark stuff is maddening.

Thanks and I am looking forward to giving Flux a try.

Oh yes, one more thing - I agree wholeheartedly with Mike. Nix the inline styles, everything should go on an external stylesheet. Thanks!
